When you’re on your period, your stamina, energy and mood are thrown for a loop. So with all those hormones going out of whack, you naturally assume that something like yoga could bring balance during this horrible time of the month. On the other hand, doing yoga while you’re menstruating could bring about some unforeseen and often embarrassing situations. But although some would discourage women from doing yoga while Mr. Monthly’s in town, one woman believes it can be a rather positive thing to do, despite the obvious risk of blood and other bodily fluids leaking out in unfortunate circumstances.
If you’re a woman, you’re going to menstruate, unless of course you’ve reached menopause.
The fact is that menstruation is something that women have had to deal with since the dawn of time. So Stephanie Gongora simply doesn’t get why some women treat a period like it’s a taboo that needs to be hidden from others.
Gongora, who’s a yoga instructor, doesn’t like that women are forced to believe that periods are to be censored.
She adds, “we hide our tampons. We’re told not to talk about period-related symptoms. We’re told period sex. is gross”. She further added that, “if we ever show any evidence of our periods, we’re censored, silenced, and told to clean ourselves up.”
So Gongora has decided to fight back against the stigma of being on your period through Instagram and yoga.
She’s known as casa_colibri on Instagram and currently has 268,000 followers, who were shocked when she uploaded a video of herself doing yoga while on the proverbial rag.
